How to Care For Your Artificial Grass This Summer

When summer comes around, a lot of our focus moves from interior to exterior design. We’re spending more time outdoors, so it makes sense if you find yourself investing your energy into making your garden as attractive as possible.

An artificial lawn is an effective low-maintenance alternative to real turf, making it easy to keep your garden looking neat and tidy. But that’s not to say it’s entirely maintenance-free, and it still needs looking after to keep it in top condition throughout the year.

If you’re not sure how to care for artificial grass over the summer and you’re looking for some pointers, you’ll find all the tips and advice you need right here.

1. Rinse it Regularly

Giving your artificial turf a hose-down is recommended year-round, but especially so in the summer. Not only does the warm season bring more dust and pollen, but it also warms the turf until it’s potentially unsafe to walk on barefoot. Rinse your lawn once or twice a week, or more often if you need to keep it a certain temperature for your kids or pets.

2. Brush The Fibres

Your fake lawn is probably going to get more use in the summer, which means it’ll start looking flat and carpet-like in high-traffic areas unless you brush it regularly. It’s a good idea to brush your turf with a stiff-bristled brush once every one-to-two weeks to keep the fibers upright.

3. Consider a Deeper Clean

Most experts recommend getting your artificial turf professionally cleaned by a company like Dirty Turf at least once a year. Booking your deep clean in the summer is best because the weather conditions are likely to be good, with no rain or frost that could make the cleaning process more difficult.

4. Remove Debris When You See It

With plants and greenery coming alive in the summer, it’s likely that your artificial lawn will become littered with debris like leaves or twigs throughout the season. You’ll want to sweep away or collect up any debris when you see it to prevent bacteria and moss buildup.

5. Look Out For Weeds

Weeds grow thicker and faster when the weather warms. Most artificial turf has a design that prevents weed growth, but you’ll still need to look out for weeds along the edges of your lawn or or through drainage holes. Weeds can quickly spread and become difficult to control, so your safest bet is to get rid of common garden weeds as you see them.

6. Check and Top Up Infill

When you’re looking for weeds and debris, this is a good time to check your turf’s infill levels. Infill weighs down the grass and offers structural benefits, so you’ll need to top it up every 12 to 18 months on average to keep it looking good and draining properly.

7. Use it Safely

Finally, you’ll need to make sure you’re using your fake lawn safely throughout the summer. That means never putting hot items like fire pits or barbecues directly on the surface, and avoiding placing heavy lawn furniture on your lawn in the same spot for too long.

Maintaining an artificial lawn might be easier than real grass, but you’ll still need to follow these tips carefully to keep your turf looking its best throughout the summer.
